The 061 attends 1,716 queries for cases of suicide risk in two and a half months

The Coordination table specialized in mental health in Catalonia for high suicide risk cases of the telephone service 061 Health Response has attended 1,716 cases from its launch on June 20 to August 30 of this year.

It was explained this Wednesday by the ‘consellert de Salut de la Generalitat, Joseph Maria Argimon, at a press conference from the Palau Robert in which they presented a new campaign to publicize this telephone service.

In total, 061 has received 2,336 queries, of which 1,716 have been answered by the desk with an average duration of 30 minutes: 43% of the calls have been answered at night and 61% were women.

The new campaign is aimed at society as a whole, but it directly questions the risk groups and their families to make the suicide hotline more visible in addition to “trying to reduce social stigma”, explained the minister.

The main message of the campaign reads: ‘Suicide is prevented by talking. If you have suicidal thoughts or know someone at risk, call the health care telephone number 061′.

In addition, it is accompanied by thoughts that a person with suicidal behavior may have such as ‘What happens to me has no solution’, ‘Living does not make me excited’ and ‘You would be better off without me’ because in the Minister’s opinion he does not have to be “paternalistic” and tell the truth.

Thus, starting next Monday, this campaign will begin through the written press, television, radio, social networks and web pages as well as on public transport and on street canopies.

At the beginning of September, the department led by Argimon promoted a immersive experience within the framework of a campaign to publicize the 061 hotline for suicidal behavior, with the aim of making suicide visible and de-stigmatizing it.

A “very ambitious” plan

The general director of Health Planning, Aina Plaza, has ensured that the Suicide Prevention Plan (Plapresc) that they have developed is “very ambitious” with the aim of reducing mortality and has stated that it cannot be achieved solely from health.

Considers that it should be addressed from different areas of society such as justice, work, education, housing, sports and culture, among others, with the aim of responding to and preventing suicide: “It challenges us all.”
